The historic rock-hewn churches here are a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was remarkable to wander among and between these 800 year-old monuments to faith and engineering. (More info from UNESCO.)

The former Head of the Northwest School is very involved in the founding of a high school in Addis Ababa: the International Leadership Academy of Ethiopia. ILAE's ultimate goal is to attract top students from all over the country, from all backgrounds, and offer them a world class education. I've been invited to teach a spring and summer prep program to 8th graders, potential members of ILAE's first 9th grade!
I started this blog in South Africa while I was in Cape Town on a Fulbright award (in 2010). That experience was great and followed up a summer trip to Cape Town in 2008. The 2008 trip was to do a digital story-telling project at the Hector Peterson Secondary School. It was written up nicely in the Northwest School news magazine, and the article can still be viewed on the school website. Seattle-based Bridges To Understanding organized that trip and has a great website with information on their programs and examples of digital stories from students at their partner sites around the world.

Why Ethiopia?

What I'm reading and listening to...
- * I found Maaza Mengiste's fictionalized account of the Derg period, "Beneath the Lion's Gaze," engaging, heart-wrenching, and every bit "a story about man’s darkest, most intricate brutality" (as this NYT Review describes).
- * AfroFM 105.3 - a local radio station that offers music and news of the city, country, continent, and world.
- * NPR's Morning Edition covered Secretary of State Kerry's visit here for the commemoration of the AU's 50th anniversary.
- * Capital is a weekly paper that "promotes free enterprise" while also offering good ethio- and afro-centric news coverage.
- * PRI's "Living on Earth" recently had a good segment on the effects of one of the large dam projects that Ethiopia is undertaking to meet demand for electrical power.
