On February 11, 1990, Nelson Mandela took his "short walk to freedom" through the gates of Victor Verster prison in Paarl. He would go on to play a leading role in the dismantling of apartheid, the liberating of the South African people, and the founding of a new, democratic nation, work for which he won a Nobel Peace Prize.
